Science was never my favorite subject in school, oftentimes because I felt like it was more complicated than it needed to be. When I gained a more simplified understanding of the human brain, a lot of things clicked into place.

The brain has three key parts:

  • The cerebral cortex handles thinking, decision-making, and logic.

  • The limbic system processes emotions and flags anything that feels important — or threatening.

  • The brain stem, the oldest part, manages survival responses like fight, flight, or freeze.

I call the brain stem the “critter brain” because it still reacts as if we’re primitive critters running from predators. It doesn’t know the difference between a bear attack and a tough conversation — it just senses danger.

Here’s what happens: The limbic system sounds the alarm, and the critter brain kicks into survival mode. Your "human brain" (the cortex) scrambles to make sense of the fear, even if the perceived threat isn't really a threat at all.

Change feels risky to your brain — but understanding the process makes it easier to move forward.
